Recollections of early life in Maine; voyage, Boston to San Francisco, 1853, in ship, Telegraph, to join his father; experiences in California; Civil War service in the "California Hundred," volunteers for the Massachusetts quota; copy of letter home, Jan. 11, 1863. With copy of letter, 1938, form his daughter, Kate C. Towle, to Dr. Herbert E. Bolton. With this: C-D 5089B. Another set of prints without letter from Miss Towle, but with photographs of commemorative battle flag and reunion ribbon, bound in.

Herbert Eugene Bolton was born on July 20, 1870 in Wilton, Wisconsin. He became Director of the Bancroft Library in 1916, and head of the History Department at Berkeley in 1919.
